Winter evening cinema
Leonard Bernstein was one of the greatest musical figures of the 20th century – a recognized and award-winning conductor, pianist, composer of symphonic and stage music, a great storyteller who introduced classical music to young listeners across the Atlantic on the television screen. This year, a film about this legendary personality came to the big and small screens.
It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, but from December 20 it can be viewed on the “Netflix” platform.
The director and main actor of the film is Bradley Cooper, Bernstein’s wife is played by Carey Mulligan, and the film, although controversial, has already received several awards and festival nominations, including the Golden Globe. Big-budget feature films about classical music legends don’t come around often, so a snowy (or rainy) winter evening is just the right time to watch this new release.

Concerts and albums – music sounds everywhere
The abundance of concerts before the turn of the century is always abundant! Operetta and jazz, opera and symphony orchestra, baroque and hip-hop, organ and chamber music, choir and theater music – it is impossible to list it all!
Large and small concert halls are playing, the choice is suitable for all tastes, ages and preferences.
You just have to find the nearest event and go to experience it in person! But if enjoying music at home is closer, then I recommend that you find a selection of the “best albums of this year” created by an international media in the vast depths of the web and indulge yourself in music in the most comfortable conditions. I can recommend it to jazz lovers US magazine “Downbeat” reader survey, which took place this year for the 88th time. Among the most highly rated album artists there are already well-known names such as Brad Meldo, Fred Hersh, Esperanza Spalding and Wayne Shorter, who passed away this year, as well as the new star, singer Samara Joy. If you haven’t heard it – I recommend it!
Eva Johansone, Liene Jakovljeva, Adriāna Roze, Edgars Raginskis and Jānis Holšteins-Upmanis are the personalities of the program “Kultūras zīna”.

A look back at the cultural events of 2023
The end of the year is a busy time in all media – various reviews, charts, evaluations and selections are created, and of course, journalists of the Culture editorial offices of the public media also make them. The year 2023 was undoubtedly powerful in the cultural sector – first of all, the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival should be mentioned, but there were no less surprises and pleasant moments in concert halls, theaters, exhibition halls, catalogs of publishing houses, cinemas and other cultural places.
What were the highlights of this year in culture? Compiled by both television and radio colleagues.
The annual overview of cultural events prepared by LTV will be on the air already on the evening of December 28 at 18.55, but the Latvian Radio 3 program “Classical TOP 10 – musical accents of 2023” will be broadcast at the beginning of the last day of the year at 11.05. It is always interesting for me to compare – whether those events that personally appealed to me the most and deeply, also impressed others and left a lasting value, when viewed in the context of the whole year.
For the beginning of the new year
As a child, January 1st seemed to me to be the most boring day of the year when NOTHING happens! And dad told us to watch in addition live broadcast from the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s concert – for a small child, it is also quite a boring event. But now I can’t imagine my start of the year without this tradition!
January 1 at At 12.15 champagne is poured into glasses and we see the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Society and the event that people around the world are listening to begins!
This concert will be played in more than 90 countries. Every year, in front of the orchestra, an outstanding conductor, the music of the Strauss family, “performed” as always “By the beautiful, blue Danube” and “Radecka’s March”. Everything is so familiar, usual, expected.
In tradition there is strength, security and a feeling that all is well. And a new year has begun again! Both Latvian Radio 3 and Latvian Television have been broadcasting the concert live for many, many years – enjoy!
