This year, the British broadcasting company “BBC” asked 177 literary experts from 56 countries of the world to find out what is the best children’s book of all time. Each expert submitted their top 10 selections, the results were tallied, and the best children’s books of all time were determined from the more than 1,000 books that appear in the ratings. Some of them are more than a hundred years old, some were written relatively recently, but all of them are well known to Latvian readers.
Six English, two American, as well as one French and one Swedish author’s works entered the list of the 10 best children’s books. Although formally described as children’s books, they are by no means just for children, and re-reading or perusing them can be a worthwhile activity at any age. When describing the 10 best children’s books, attention was also paid to their translations into Latvian.
10. Roalds Dāls. “Matilda” (1988)
The popular British author of children’s books, Roald Dahl, has written such famous works as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “James and the Giant Peach”, “LDM or the Big Friendly Giant”, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and many others. His books have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, and several works have also been successfully filmed.
Matilda Wormwood, the main character of Dahl’s book “Matilda”, discovers at an early age that she is unusually smart and gifted. Not everyone likes it, and at home his parents don’t understand him, but at school he is terrorized by the despotic headmistress Trunchbull. However, Matilde is not only very resourceful, she also has some supernatural abilities, which the girl uses to defend herself and resist injustice. The book is illustrated by the outstanding British cartoonist, artist Quentin Blake. “Is there a single child in the world who does not have Matilda on their list of favorite books?” asks English writer, researcher David Robson.
The book was first published in Latvian in 1997, translated by Dina Sīle.
