The best building 2020 is in Munich | Culture | DW

The building comes from the Dutch architecture firm MVRDV and NVO Nuyken von Oefele. “WERK12” is a programmatic title that fits in well with the times. “The design by WERK12 combines a simple shape, honest materials and transparent facades,” said the jury. “A key element of the design is the flexibility of the rooms. The building’s extra high ceilings – 5.5 meters – allow future users to change the interior configuration.”

The glass facade of the office building is adorned with huge letters – an urban work of art that was developed in collaboration with the artists Christian Engelmann and Beate Engl. “Common expressions from German comics are shown in bold font size. The five-meter-high colloquial lettering pays homage to graffiti culture,” said the jury.

The light-flooded office building stands on the former Pfanni site near Munich’s Ostbahnhof. The industrial area has developed into a very innovative, experimental district in recent years.

Every year since 2007, the DAM Prize of the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt has been awarded to outstanding buildings in Germany that present themselves through their bold design and careful craftsmanship. A total of 100 architectural buildings will be nominated in advance. The roof greenhouse in Oberhausen was also there this year – a design that is just as forward-looking.
