The Best Baguette of 2024 competition in New York takes place on Tuesday March 19. If you haven’t done so, take your tickets from now on, the event is sold out every year.
For an exceptional event, an exceptional jury. Like every year, it is personalities from the culinary world, or from the New York Francophile universe who will, during the evening, blind taste the baguettes and special breads presented by our 17 finalists. These experts, each with their own story and specialty, will bring a unique perspective to the participants’ creations.
At the forefront of this jury, Gabriel Kreuther, chef of the eponymous restaurant in Midtown Manhattan – he is featured prominently in the latest list of the city’s 100 best restaurants published by the New York Times. He began his career in Germany, France and Switzerland before arriving in New York, at La Caravelle then at Jean-Georges. Gabriel Kreuther notably received a James Beard Foundation Award as “Best Chef in New York”.
Thierry Atlan, renowned chocolatier and Meilleur Ouvrier de France, whose journey of more than 40 years in pastry began at the Lenotre school. Based in New York for a decade, he opened a store in Soho, offering macaroons, chocolates and artisanal ice creams, delighting New York gourmands.
Cécilia Jourdan, Parisian by birth, brings a cultural and linguistic touch. Having embraced a career in the performing arts before devoting herself to teaching French and digital marketing, Cécilia co-founded Hello French, a platform dedicated to French culture. With almost two million Francophiles in its community, it represents the spirit of sharing and exchange at the heart of French culture.
Scott Cioe, trained notably at Bouchon Bakery, Café Boulud and Gordon Ramsay, brings expertise in classic pastry and culinary innovation. His unique approach, blending nostalgia and French techniques, promises a nuanced assessment of the baguettes in competition.
Dorie Greenspan, author of 14 cookbooks and winner of five James Beard Awards, enriches the jury with her journalistic experience and her deep knowledge of French cuisine. Proud holder of the French Order of Agricultural Merit, she will bring her enlightened perspective on the authenticity and quality of the baguettes presented.
Natasha Pickowicz, chef and author, is a three-time finalist for the James Beard Foundation Awards. An activist as much as a pastry chef, she is recognized for her work linking her craft to social justice. She has collaborated with many New York institutions, including Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, God’s Love We Deliver, the Brigid Alliance, and Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. His participation on the jury guarantees particular attention to the values and community impact of the participants.
Finally, Jonathan Pereira, pastry chef for the Mandarin Oriental group, began his career in Puerto Rico. Having worked in luxury establishments around the world, Jonathan offers a global and innovative perspective on baking, enriched by his diverse culinary experiences.
As usual, these jurors will taste the baguettes of the 17 finalists blind. They will award the Grand Jury Prize, as well as 2 runners-up, and a special bread prize. For their part, the public present during the event will vote for the Public Prize.
