San Andreas built on the gameplay mechanics and features of its predecessor and proved that GTA games can offer a compelling story that is much more than just games about stolen cars, gang fights or random robberies. With the help of fan-favorite character Carl Johnson, players discover the connections between members of a tight-knit street gang in the impoverished suburbs of San Andreas. A brutal satire of Los Angeles in the 90s – with allusions to police corruption, rampant drug use and gang wars – a gripping part of the series that has proven itself to this day.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002): a revolution for the series
In many ways, Rockstar took the lead with the release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Thanks to the technical innovations of GTA III, Vice City featured the best storyline in GTA history to date, with a protagonist made even more memorable thanks to the voice of actor Ray Liotta. Generously inspired by Scarface, Vice City follows the rise of aspiring mobster Tommy Vercetti in the criminal underworld of Vice City (the fictional equivalent of Miami, according to Rockstar) in the ’80s. With an even more immersive open world and more customization options and an overall stronger story, Vice City established itself as the truly memorable first installment of the GTA saga.
