Cervical cancer is one of the most feared diseases for women. This disease is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

According to data from the Global Burden of Cancer Study (Globocan) from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women in Indonesia. Actually, this disease can be prevented by giving the HPV vaccine.

HPV or human papilloma virus is a virus that is usually released through sexual activity. This virus can cause disease around the anus, genitals, and oropharynx or throat. Another fact that you need to know, HPV can infect both men and women, Mother.

In addition to cervical cancer, HPV in women can also cause vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and cancer of the anus or rectum. While in men can cause penile cancer and rectal cancer.

HPV affects more women because the cervical area is difficult to ‘clean’, especially after sexual intercourse. In men, the penis area is more open, so it’s easy to ‘clean’.

The HPV virus can enter the body when there are lesions or sores. This virus will infect the surrounding area.

In general, HPV produces E6 and E7 proteins. This protein will interact with P53 and retinoblastoma. After that, the virus will mutate or continue to replicate, until it creates a malignancy.

HPV types and HPV vaccine types

There are many types of HPV, Mother. However, there are 4 types that are widely known, namely type 6, type 11, type 16, and type 18.

Types 6 and 11 are viruses that cause genital warts. Keep in mind, 90 percent of genital warts caused by HPV.

While type 16 and type 18 are the causes of cervical cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, rectal cancer, and penile cancer.

Vaccination will depend on the type. There are three types of HPV vaccine, namely:

  1. Bivalent: to provide protection against infection with HPV viruses type 16 and type 18.
  2. Quadrivalent: to provide protection against infection with HPV viruses type 6, type 11, type 16, and type 18.
  3. Ninevalent: to provide protection against infection with 9 types of HPV virus types, namely type 6, type 11, type 16, type 18, type 31, type 33, type 45, type 52, and type 58.
