Mrs. Heersma (fictitious name) made her annual Austrian hut tour last June. That is quite remarkable, because the lady is now 76 and she has been suffering from osteoporosis for more than 20 years.
Nevertheless, she can still practice her great hobbies, mountain hiking and Nordic walking, without pain. Since the series of eight treatments 15 years ago, the lady still visits me from time to time. Then I treat her a few times with medical acupuncture for the pains caused by her collapsing vertebrae. This way she can keep moving and that moving is good against bone decalcification. In this way, the lady can stay in the middle of life.
From the age of 35, our body slowly breaks down more bone than it creates. Your bone tissue then loses more and more bone minerals, especially calcium. As a result, your bone mass decreases and there is also a change in the bone structure: it becomes porous. The chance of a bone fracture is therefore increasing. And vertebrae often collapse: these are actually also painful fractures. The RIVM estimates that about 850,000 people in the Netherlands have osteoporosis. Many people don’t realize that. They do suffer, but do not know where that pain comes from.
Scientists think you can stop the progression of osteoporosis or even reduce osteoporosis by putting weight on your body. So by moving. Of course, that burden is only possible if you are pain-free. This is where the role of medical acupuncture comes in: with medical acupuncture I can often treat pain and inflammation very well. People are often pain-free after a few treatments or have much less pain.
Osteoporosis is sometimes confused with osteoarthritis, but osteoarthritis is a rheumatic disease. The cartilage in the joint wears out. It has now been scientifically proven that acupuncture often works very well against the pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis and other rheumatic diseases.
