In general, it was found that a short museum visit of 14.3 minutes reduced anxiety, stress and negative mood for all visitors, regardless of the music. “Art definitely has the potential to do us extremely good,” emphasized Leder. But aesthetics definitely play a role. “Many researchers would like to be able to claim that art is beneficial,” says Leder, “but there is still far too little research to prove this.” For example, you have to differentiate between kitsch and art: “kitsch that can quickly evoke positive feelings, such as a beautiful image of a cat” and “real aesthetics that go deeper.”
“Processing it meaningfully, so that I have the feeling that something is being conveyed to me that can be meaningful to me, is the essential ingredient for art to be good for us,” says Leder. This is shown by his previous research, which is primarily being carried out in the federal capital. “Here in Vienna we are a leading international research group that is trying to test this in good experiments like these,” said the researcher. The study results can be checked in your own experiment – with headphones provided by the museum.
