The Belgian Competition Authority has decided: Waasland-Beveren descends in D1B, D1A should be played by 16 teams

Bad news for Waasland-Beveren: the club should be relegated to D1B.

While the Waeslanders still hoped to escape in a D1A made up of 18 teams, the Belgian Competition Authority has decided and it will not be. In a 130-page long report, she announced that the decision made by the Pro League to bring Beveren down to D1B after 29 days is well “justified”, as announced by our colleagues at HLN.

However, the club was hopeful of maintaining itself but it would seem, according to our colleagues, that the refusal to play the 30th day of classic phase had prejudiced the club.

Therefore, the next season will be able to unfold as the clubs voted on May 15 during their general assembly. That is to say with 16 teams and not 18. OHL and Beerschot will have to play the return final to determine which of the two clubs will take the place of Waasland-Beveren in D1A.

But this format could still change. In fact, a new Pro Legaue General Assembly will take place on July 7. If a new formula wins 67% of the vote, it could well come into force.
