The beginning of a great era? Simon Rattle’s start in Munich

As the designated new chief conductor, Simon Rattle has now directed his first concert projects with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. A programmatic debut through and through, to be heard in streaming.

A deep trust is necessary in order to perform works in which the interplay between conductor and orchestra does not function according to conventional patterns. The one-hour “in vain” by Georg Friedrich Haas from 2000 and Joseph Haydn’s 90th Symphony from 1788 are such risky works. In the variations of the second movement from Haydn’s symphony there are solos that appear and should work as if improvised. A lot of initiative and personal responsibility is therefore required of the orchestra; that is exactly what the conductor must allow. There are comparable challenges at Haas, and this is aggravated by the fact that the orchestra has to play from memory at times in total darkness.
