The Beginner’s Guide to Shifting Gears in an Automatic Car – Everything You Need to Know

Jakarta

Automatic cars have several gear settings according to their respective functions. For those of you who are beginner automatic car drivers, know that this is the right time to shift gears to the N position.

Choosing a car with an automatic transmission as a daily vehicle for use on congested roads seems a wise choice. Automatic cars tend to be more practical and easier to use because they don’t have a clutch pedal. Just need to move the transmission lever to a certain gear, the car can go forward, backward and stop.

For those of you who are new to driving an automatic car, you need to know that on the transmission lever there are several letters that symbolize the function of the gears. Some common letters include P, R, N, and D. There are also some cars that have 1, 2, or L. Each letter has a meaning and function.

P means Park which is used when the car wants to park. When the transmission lever is in P, it means the transmission will lock so the car doesn’t slide by itself. R means Reverse which is used when the car is going backwards. Meanwhile, if you want to start the car, you only need to move the transmission lever to position D, which means Drive.

There is also N which means Neutral. When the gear position is in Neutral, it means the transmission gear is in the free position. But when is the right time to shift gears to N position in an automatic car? You can move to position N when the car stops for a short time.

Quoted by detikOto from the Mitsubishi Xpander manual, the gear can be shifted to neutral when the car is stopped for a long time.

“To wait a longer time with the engine running, place the selector lever in the ‘N’ position and use the parking brake, while holding the vehicle still with the normal brake,” Mitsubishi wrote in the Xpander manual.

In the Avanza manual it is also explained that if the car stops for a long time, you can shift the gear to the N position.

“If the vehicle is stopped for a long time, position the transmission lever to P or N,” is the explanation.

But don’t forget that if the gear is in Neutral, you have to press the brake to prevent the car from rolling on its own.
