The Beauty of Walking Together: A Couple’s Journey of Faith and Service through World Youth Day

Fabiola and Gustavo met at Charismatic Revival gatherings and later volunteered together in Rio de Janeiro, Krakow, Panama and Lisbon for WYD. This young couple has experienced helping each other every time, and felt the beauty of diversity and the beauty of walking together in the same way.

(Vatican News Network) Gustavo is a designer who conceived the logo for the 2013 World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro. It never occurred to him that Christ the Savior himself designed a far-reaching future for him. During the World Youth Day in Rio, he fell in love with 26-year-old Fabiola, who later married and continued to serve God together. Fabiola, a journalist, told this news network about their life hand in hand.

Fabiola pointed out that the World Youth Day itself contains a message of profound practical significance. The event “promotes solidarity and communion, showing the beauty of Church members being together and witnessing the faith together”. The attendees become one big family.

“The World Youth Day is a school that walks together and changes lives.” According to Fabiola, both the church and society are challenged by diversity. Many times, it is only superficially united. The beauty of the World Youth Day lies in “seeing unity in diversity”. During the preparations for World Youth Day, we can really feel the richness of the Church: “Many people from different cultures and countries help each other”.

In 2015, Fabiola and Gustavo were invited to participate in the World Youth Festival in Krakow not long after their wedding. For them, this invitation is “the sign of God”. They spent their first year of marriage as a family in Poland, the hometown of Saint John Paul II, the father of WYD. Then, in 2019, they went to Panama to do volunteer work again, and now they are also devoting themselves to the upcoming World Youth Day. The couple stayed in Lisbon for two months to prepare for the grand gathering of the pope and the youth. Today, for the young couple, it is a mission, God’s answer to their call. “We have nothing in return for what God has done for us! We have received so much that we long to give ourselves to the best of our ability.”
