Liputan6.com, Jakarta – British scientists praised the beauty of an asteroid that had just been brought back from space. Recently this asteroid was named Bennu.
“This is really beautiful, really beautiful,” said Dr Ashley King, quoted from the page BBCThursday (12/10/2023).
The material was taken by a US space agency (NASA) mission and returned to Earth 17 days ago, currently being examined in a special laboratory in Texas.
“We have confirmed that we are heading for the right asteroid,” Dr King told BBC News.
Three days of analysis conducted by Natural History Museum (NHM) experts and five other people on the “Quick Look” team showed the extraterrestrial black powder was rich in carbon and water-laden minerals.
That’s a good sign. There is a theory that asteroid rocks are rich in carbon (organic), rich in water.
This could potentially be how we get water in the oceans and some of the compounds needed to start life.
Samples of the asteroid Bennu will be used to test these ideas.
“We try to find out who we are and where we come from. What is this vast universe like?” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson while giving a briefing at the Johnson Space Center, where the special laboratory is located.
While it’s clear that the mission has returned “abundant samples,” scientists still aren’t sure exactly how many Bennus they actually have.
