The Latvian Radio 2 singer came to the interview from her native Ventspils, where she works as a music teacher at Ventspils 2nd Secondary School. There, the musician also sang for a long time in the ensemble “Jūras akmentiņi”, in which her voice was presented to radio listeners for the first time. Several arrangements of self-composed songs and songs of other authors have been made in recent years, Katrīna Bindere works diligently with the association “Saldās sejas” and Guntar Rača, whose poem “Piespied stop” once inspired the creation of the song. Above all, Katrina Binderi is encouraged to write songs from the feelings she has, moments that also make you hold your breath: “This is a difficult time, but the album is about and around love, both beautiful and painful moments.”
Bindere started singing at the age of three, when her parents decided that their daughter could join the “Jūras akmentiņi” ensemble. Subsequently, she studied in the jazz and pop department of the Ventspils Music School, followed by studies at the music high school, where she learned to sing, play the piano and other skills. “Sometimes I’m scared, I want to stay true to people I’ve fallen in love with and it’s nice to be with. I had a teacher, Astra Plostniece, in ‘Sea Stones’ and at music school, which I also followed. While I went come on, even my little dreams have come true, ”explains the singer .
Katrina didn’t feel jazz as her own, she was more connected to pop music. She calls her piano her instrument, on which her songs have been written since her teens. Good harmony was established in “Sea Pebbles” with Roberta Pētersons, who managed to create a brilliant career, as well as Edvardas Griezi, also a singer.
“Robert started writing his songs early, we sang a lot together, which I really liked. My first songs remained in the archives, I didn’t think they were worth showing to anyone. I criticized myself a lot for a long time, I didn’t I liked nothing,” admits the singer.
Finally, in 2018, Katrina attended the concerts of the authors of Guntar Račs and dared to show him her song “Piespied stop”.
On the other hand, already in 2014, Bindere debuted in front of a larger audience in the national selection of the Eurovision Song Contest “Dziesma 2014”, in which she participated with the song “Moment And Tomorrow”. The invitation to collaborate was a surprise, the big stage of the competition, the bright personalities impressed Bindere: “At that time I was going to Riga to learn singing with Aiga Rūrāne and Inga Bēržina, maybe through them the authors of the song they heard me. I didn’t think then to show my songs to a large audience.
The next brilliant bid to represent Latvia in the competition was in the 2020 “Supernova” when Katrīna Bindere became one of the main favorites in the fight for victory with the joint work “I Will Break Your Heart” created by herself, Jānis Driksna and Niklāv Sekač, but Samanta Tīna took the laurels. The song was written at the “Riga Live” camp, where Katrīna Binder met producer Kaspars Ansons. She arranged the songs “Grapefruit”, “Es lidošu”, “Coin”, “Vīna klaze”, “Delit” and “Brīvības iela” from her debut mini-album “Azturu elpu”.
“It was hard enough for me to understand what is special about me so that someone would listen to me. It was a serious battle with myself: will I succeed? Music is an inseparable part of my life, but faith in my the strength didn’t come immediately,” says the musician.
Currently, the singer does not plan to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest – her biography has already included many different solo competitions, including “X-Factors”, and family life takes up a lot of her time. In her documents her full name is now Katrina Anete Binder-Choder, the singer takes care of her little son Elvi, who will not become an obstacle to her musical career. On the contrary, the role of mother gave me self-confidence and the strength to take on new responsibilities.
