More than half a century after the Beatles broke up, a new track is released. Now and Then will be the last Beatles song, the surviving band members have said.
The issue will be released on November 2 at 3:00 PM Dutch time the band’s website announced.
The 1978 song was written and sung by John Lennon, who was shot dead in 1980. George Harrison, who died in 2001, also contributed to the song.
The band’s surviving members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have now completed the track. Earlier this year it was announced that McCartney had gone into the studio to finish an old demo by The Beatles.
Now and Then is released on vinyl along with The Beatles’ first single, Love Me Do from 1962. In an accompanying video, McCartney and Starr, among others, but also Lennon’s son Sean, talk about how the release of the song came about.
In the 1990s, two other old John Lennon recordings were already used for two new Beatles songs (Free as a bird in Real Love), as part of it Beatles Anthologyproject. This time, AI has been used to remove tape hiss and other sounds, without affecting the sound of Lennon’s voice.
‘Surreal Experience’
In a press release, McCartney and Starr said finishing the recordings had been a “surreal experience”. “There was John’s voice, crystal clear,” says McCartney. “It’s quite emotional. And we’re all playing along, it’s a real Beatles recording. To still be working on Beatles music in 2023 and release a new song that the public hasn’t heard yet, that’s exciting to me .”
“It was the closest we’ve ever come to having him with us again, so it was very emotional for all of us,” Ringo Starr agreed in the press release. “It was like John was there again. Unbelievable.”
A short documentary about the latest Beatles song will be released on the band’s YouTube channel on November 1.
