The beaten basketball star does not find justice in the Russian court: four attackers, one guilty

A. Švedas was brutally beaten in May 2023. Four assailants killed the famous Russian basketball player in the center of Moscow, near a popular restaurant.

According to the case file, first, the conflict arose between a group of young people and A. Šved’s wife, and it was the fear of losing money betting on the results of -basketball tournaments.

When A. Švedas approached after leaving the restaurant, the hooligans went to work with their fists. The 198 cm tall defender lost consciousness from the missed shots and hit his head on the pavement as he fell.

Suffering from a serious injury, the long-time leader of the national team was rushed to the hospital and could no longer compete that season.

In court, the chef of the restaurant also said that he was hurt, and when the fight started, he ran outside and tried to protect A. Švedas.

Although the suspects were caught quickly, the trial was not so simple.

Three young people aged 17-20, including Ramzin Amiraslanov, a student at the private British art and design gym who struck the first blow, have been charged with hooliganism and violence during their involvement in a group.

A fine of 500,000 was threatened for this. up to one million rubles (5-10 thousand euros) or forced labor for up to five years or imprisonment for up to seven years.

However, a month later, all three were released, their status was reclassified to witnesses, and R. Amiraslanov’s personal driver Yusuf Mirashurov was named as the only person guilty of the attack.

After seeing the conflict, he ran and hit A. Šved twice in the head.

In court, J. Mirashurov himself partially admitted his guilt, unlike the other suspects.

Prosecutors had asked for a five-year prison sentence, which the court this month limited to three. Since each day of temporary arrest is equivalent to a day and a half of jail, the driver will be able to go free next May.

Lawyer A. Shved was surprised by such an atom of the case and asked to explain why the suspicions were dropped against the other attackers and why they were not questioned even in court after to be witnesses. He also did not rule out whether the decision could be appealed to a higher court.

At the time of the attack, A. Švedas represented the CSKA Moscow club, but later he left Russia. Last season, the 35-year-old veteran played for Taiyuan’s Shanxi Loongs. In the Chinese competition, his statistics reached 15.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 9.1 assists.

A. Švedas became the EuroLeague champion in 2008 as part of CSKA, in 2012-2015 he tried his hand at the NBA league, then for six years he wore the equipment of “Khimki” from the Moscow region, where he was also instructed by a Lithuanian coach. Curtinaitis Rimas.
