Thunderous applause despite the corona pandemic at the premiere of the “Bayreuth Baroque” festival: the new production of the opera “Carlo il Calvo” under the direction of the Austrian countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic delighted the audience in Bayreuth. The opera by Nicola Antonio Porpora about an inheritance dispute was brought back to the stage on Thursday evening after almost 300 years.
Cencic, who played the role of a domineering tyrant himself for the first time since the beginning of the crisis, staged the baroque opera in a unique original location. The Margravial Opera House is one of the few remaining theaters from the 18th century in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two operas and several concerts can be seen there until September 13th – all from the time the baroque jewel was created.
