1381. Event:
Joint bicycle coding campaign by ADFC and Munich Police – Willy-Brandt-Platz/Riem Arcaden
On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., the next joint bicycle coding campaign by the Munich Police Headquarters and the ADFC will take place at Willy-Brandt-Platz/Riem Arcaden. As part of the event, police officers will provide information on the topic of bicycle theft and give useful tips and advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of bicycle theft.
From a police perspective, a coded bicycle is very useful, for example in the event of loss or theft, so that the bicycle can be quickly assigned to the injured party or loser and returned to them.
The Munich district association of the ADFC has been coding bicycles with the EIN code (owner identification proof) for over 20 years. This code was developed by the Hessian police in the early 1990s and is now used in almost all federal states. The code is made up of the city or district, a street code, the house number, the owner’s initials and the year of coding. The code can therefore be used to identify the owner and registration or data management is not necessary.
How does coding work?
Before each coding, the owner of the bike to be coded must show an ID card and proof of ownership of the bike (e.g. purchase receipt). The ID number is noted on the coding order. If the purchase receipt is no longer available, the owner signs a declaration of ownership, which the ADFC keeps. The code is then entered accordingly and passed on to a technician, who then engraves it on the vehicle. In addition to the owner’s details, a rough description of the bike is also noted on the order (manufacturer, brand, color, etc.). The frame number already attached to the bike is also read and checked directly on the bike. The completed coding order is scanned and archived by the ADFC. The original remains with the owner. Advance registration is not necessary.
In principle, all types of bicycles, including e-bikes (e.g. Pedelecs), can be coded. Bicycles made of titanium or carbon cannot be coded. Alternatively, these bicycles can be labelled.
The ADFC charges up to 15 euros per coded bicycle. Police advice is free of charge.
This year, another coding campaign will take place in the area of the Munich Police Headquarters.
