The conflict between the pro-Myung (pro-Lee Jae-myung) and non-Myung (non-Lee Jae-myung) factions of the Democratic Party of Korea is leading to a battle over the future of pro-Myung General Secretary Jo Jung-sik ahead of the general election. The Non-Myung faction argued that “the Secretary-General should be replaced with someone with a lighter faction,” but the pro-Myung faction insisted that he remain in office, saying, “The Non-Myung faction is worried about nominations, so they are putting the Secretary General at stake.” The Secretary General is a party position that plays a key role in nominations. Secretary-General Cho expressed his resignation along with former floor leader Park Gwang-on when the arrest plan for Representative Lee Jae-myung was passed, but only former floor leader Park stepped down and President Cho remains in office.

On the 29th, Representative Lee Won-wook of the non-profit organization said in this newspaper, “Secretary-General Cho should step down from his position,” and “If we pursue true integration, not just superficial integration, there must be a comprehensive personnel reform.” On the 27th, the non-Myung faction raised the issue of the appointment of the secretary-general, saying that the pro-Myung faction of the party leadership has become more pro-Myung faction with the appointment of former Daejeon Daedeok-gu mayor Park Jeong-hyeon, a pro-Myung faction member, as a nominated supreme member. A non-religious member of the re-elected lawmaker also said, “Wouldn’t true unity be achieved only if we make changes starting with the Secretary-General, who will be involved in general election nominations?” The non-partisan group is claiming that ‘personnel with a lighter faction should be in charge of general election nominations.’

One pro-Myung faction lawmaker said, “The non-Myung faction is talking about ‘unification’ from now on, but in the back, they are weighing the pros and cons of nomination,” and “They are trying to shake things up even before the launch of the general election planning team by mentioning ‘factions.’” Secretary General Cho is also expected to serve as head of the general election planning team. The pro-Myung faction once again mentioned the disciplinary action against those who voted against the ruling party. Rep. Yang Lee Won-young recently said on Facebook, “Floor Leader Hong Ik-pyo promised to hand over the passing faction to the ‘ethics judge,’ but is she just roughly crushing it and passing by?” The trend among the party leadership is to continue with Secretary-General Cho. Floor leader Hong Ik-pyo said at a press conference that day, “Secretary-General Jo Jeong-sik will continue to carry out his duties.” An official from the party leadership said, “If a new person comes in place of Secretary-General Cho, the ranks preparing for the general election may be disrupted,” and “Secretary-General Cho has been performing his duties smoothly, so there is no need to change him.” Secretary-General Cho said, “Our position is that we will follow the representative’s instructions.”
