It took a long time before the skûtsjes could go wild on the Snitser Mar. At first it was a matter of waiting for the Sneekweek to finish, and once the starting shot had been given, the skippers were so eager that they made two massive false starts.
Three times was a charm and at the third start Sneek was the best way. At the top barrel it turned out that Joure had made the best shot. Lemmer came around it second.
The race management had opted for an hourglass. That is a route with two crossing legs. In those cross reaches the Lemster skûtsje came closer and closer to that of Joure. These two were getting further and further ahead of the rest of the field. It became a two-way battle.
