No new conflict
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting for the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The Azerbaijani region, largely inhabited by Armenians, declared independence and became the focus of a war between the two countries. In 1994, an armistice put an end to this. The region is officially part of Azerbaijan, but is governed independently, supported by Armenia.
The ceasefire is fragile and has been violated several times. In 2016 it came to a four-day war, in which about 100 people were killed on both sides. Both countries claimed to have killed hundreds of soldiers from the opposing side.
