The Battle for Buenos Aires: Milei vs. Massa in Final Election Debate

BUENOS AIRES –

In a close electoral scenario, the far-right Javier Milei and the ruling party Sergio Massa face each other on Sunday in the last television debate ahead of the November 19 runoff that will define the next president of Argentina.

Milei, from La Libertad Avanza, and Massa, from the Peronist Unión por la Patria and Minister of Economy, will debate at night at the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, in a duel that promises to be harsh. Both are betting on tilting in their favor many Argentines who remain undecided or are considering voting blank due to the rejection generated by the two contenders.

Several surveys show a scenario of a technical tie – with a slight advantage for one candidate or the other, although within the margin of error – with a view to the second electoral round in which Peronism risks its permanence in power, which it has held for the majority. in the last 20 years, and La Libertad Avanza, a young force on the political scene, reaching government for the first time.

The focus will be on Milei, an ultra-liberal economist with a caustic tongue and angry temperament who is not used to political debates. In front of him will be a leader with a long career who has held different public positions and has been a candidate for president on other occasions.

In the first electoral round on October 22, Massa obtained more than 36% of the votes, generating a surprise, since Milei was the favorite. The ultraliberal reached almost 30% and Patricia Bullrich, from the center-right coalition Together for Change, reached almost 24%, leaving them out of the runoff.

For next Sunday’s elections, Milei has agreed to support Bullrich and has been advised by consultants from the circle of former conservative president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), an ally of that political leader.

The debate will be divided into thematic blocks: Economy, Argentina’s relations with the world, Education and Health, Production and work, Security and Human Rights and democratic coexistence.

Prior to the first round of elections, two other debates were held in which a total of five presidential candidates participated.
