It is the first production model to use electrified turbocharger technology derived from Formula 1.

After almost sixty years, Mercedes-AMG has introduced a new model that returns a four-cylinder engine under the hood of the SL series. The new AMG SL 43 will be the basis of the offer, which will complement the more powerful versions of the SL 55 4Matic + and SL 63 4Matic +, under the hoods of which is a bi-turbo supercharged 4.0-liter V8 engine.
The basis of the new AMG SL 43 was the 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol M139, which, however, is the first production car to be complemented by electric turbocharger technology, which the carmaker took over from its Formula 1 race cars.
The car is therefore traditionally equipped with a 48V mild-hybrid electrical system that works with a belt driven by a starter-generator. However, in addition to helping the internal combustion engine, the generator also powers a small electric motor in the turbocharger, which spins it until the exhaust gases take on this task.

Thanks to this electric assistance, the engine should offer a smoother start of power, better response in the entire speed range and also better economy. At the same time, no one has to worry that the basic AMG SL 43 is short of breath.
The two-liter four-cylinder produces 280 kW (381 hp) at 6,750 min-1 and a maximum torque of 480 Nm in the range of 3250 to 5000 min-1. The mild hybrid system should be able to assist with power of up to 10 kW (14 hp) in certain driving situations.
The engine will be combined exclusively with the AMG nine-speed automatic transmission, which drives only the rear wheels. However, the car should be able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds and the maximum speed should reach 275 km / h.

Despite half the number of cylinders and volume, the basic AMG SL 43 will certainly not suffer from a lack of performance. In addition, the lighter engine under the hood should benefit from driving characteristics, to which the chassis and stabilizers should be easily adapted.
The basic AMG SL 43 will otherwise offer the AMG Ride Control chassis as well as the AMG Dynamic Select driving mode selector with Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport + and Individual modes. In addition, the optional Dynamic Plus package adds Race mode and other useful features, including a 10 mm lowered chassis, different engine mounts, electronically controlled self-locking differential and yellow brake calipers.

The four-cylinder AMG SL 43 is standard on 19 “alloy wheels, but rims with a diameter of 20 and 21 inches will also be available as an option. The main hallmark of the four-cylinder will be the four round tailpipes of the exhaust system, while the eight-cylinder has square tailpipes.
In terms of optional equipment, the basic AMG will offer the same as the eight-cylinder models. Customers can thus pay extra for the rear axle swivel system, individual manufactory modifications, chrome or carbon accessories and other details.
