Jakarta –
Caesar Baribis stretches long, from Purwakarta Regency to the Baribis hills in Majalengka Regency. The Baribis Fault is the longest fault in Java Island. However, information is often spread that the Baribis Fault could endanger Jakarta with the potential for a damaging earthquake. Is that right?
Dr. Irwan Meilano Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology (FITB) Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in the ‘Eureka! 14th Edition: Broken Earth’ shares his opinion. According to him, there are enough experts who study this matter.
“We made publications in 2018 or 2017 and also worked with foreign researchers. We published in the journal about earthquake source, referred to as the Kendeng Baribis Fault zone. That’s an old publication,” said Irwan.
“But there have been several recent studies which have succeeded in detailing the source of the earthquake and including one that passed through the southern part of the city of Jakarta. And the professor from BRIN later called it the Java Backthrust. So, the source of the thrust earthquake is on the island of Java,” he continued.
In a way, some research has confirmed the existence of the Kendeng Baribis Fault Zone. The zone is quite long, although it is believed that it is divided into several sources, starting south of Surabaya, south of Semarang, then moving to Central Java and West Java, such as around Majalengka, Subang, to enter the southern region of Jakarta.
So the question is whether the potential for this earthquake can produce shocks that have an impact on Jakarta?
“The answer is yes, and not only Jakarta, several other nearby cities,” he explained.
Interestingly, in historical records in the 1700-1800s, there were several earthquakes that impacted big cities around the western part of Java Island which probably originated from the Baribis Fault. Because of that, Irwan warned that people from now on will be more aware of their buildings. Make sure the building meets earthquake-resistant building standards so that damage caused by the earthquake can be minimized.
