The Vigo Bar Association will begin on February 1 a free advisory service on illegal housing occupation. Up to 50 lawyers, in turn, will inform the landlords of how to act legally against squatters who seize their real estate. The lawyers will attend the queries through a telephone line with the number 900. Previously, the bar association will give them a training course on the matter.

This service is part of an agreement signed on December 4, 2020 between the Consello da Avogaca Galega (CAG) and the Instituto Galego de Vivenda e Solo (IGVS). The collaboration agreement consists of providing an advisory service to individuals who own homes that are illegally occupied. Also included are beneficial owners, those who have the right to enjoy housing or collect rents while they live.

To provide information to the landlords, the CAG organized a weekly shift of guards, distributed among the seven Galician law schools.

The landlords will be able to make their inquiries by phone. They must fill in a web form by email and be attended by a lawyer on duty within 24 to 48 hours. There will also be a 900 information number that will be attended on business days from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00, and on Saturday mornings.

The lawyer on duty will offer advice and guidance on administrative or judicial procedures that have to do with the rights and obligations of the owners or beneficial owners of the dwellings. They will follow the instructions developed by the CAG in a guide.

The Vigo Bar Association plans to be on call for eight weeks a year in which its lawyers will provide advice. In order to recruit those interested, the school will draw up a list of those who apply for registration in said service.

Every day, the lawyer to whom the list corresponds to provide the service at the headquarters of the Bar Association and, at the end of the week, it will intervene in a non-face-to-face way. The list will be made up of 50 practicing lawyers, of which 10 are substitutes.
