The artistic initiative of the small gold coin “Key” has been served by the Latvian cultural heritage – the lock of the dowry box and the fittings, which were made exquisitely luxurious by the ancient craftsmen.
The key has a special, one might even say a bit mystical symbolic meaning, the Bank of Latvia points out. It has the ability to both unlock and close: open the door to a specific room, give access to treasures or deny these opportunities. The key has power that elevates it, elevates it above other objects in the world of things.
The central bank also recalls that in Japan, the key is considered a sign of success, because it symbolically opens the door to hidden spiritual treasures. In Christian-related works of art, two keys reflect St. Peter’s power: to open the gates of both paradise and hell. The Pope’s coat of arms also shows two keys. In the Middle Ages, however, the ritual of handing over keys had a symbolic meaning: it was a complete takeover of power. In fairy tales and legends, the key often symbolizes various obstacles that must be overcome in order to remember the mystery.
The front of the coin depicts a key and fragments of dowel fittings, while the reverse shows a lock fitting.
The author of the graphic design of the collection coin is Laimonis Šēnbergs. The author of the plastic design of the coin is the artist Ligita Franckeviča.
From 27 May, the new coin will be available for purchase on the Bank of Latvia’s numismatic product purchase website “e-monetas.lv”. Coin price – 98.00 euros, purchase limit for one person – 2 coins. The coin has a circulation of 2,000 copies. The coin is made of “Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt” (The Netherlands).
The “Key” collection coin is a legal tender in the Republic of Latvia (however, it is unlikely that such coins will actually be in circulation, as the collection coins are essentially works of art and are especially in demand by numismatists and other interested parties).
