The Baltic ministers agree on the need to establish a humanitarian corridor in Ukraine

Minister of Welfare Gatis Eglītis (JKP) together with Lithuanian and Estonian Ministers of Social Affairs today signed a joint statement on the need for green corridors to provide humanitarian assistance in war-torn Ukraine, says Egils Zariņš, Public Relations Specialist, Communication Department of the Ministry of Welfare (MoW).

He informed that a meeting of the Welfare, Health and Family Committee of the Baltic Assembly took place in Vilnius today, where Eglītis informed the members of the Baltic Parliament about the planned Latvian measures to receive Ukrainian refugees in Latvia and provide them with all the necessary assistance.

In a conversation with Lithuanian Minister of Social Security and Labor Monika Navickienis, Eglītis emphasized the importance of close co-operation between the Baltic States and Poland in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and calling on the European Union, its member states and international partners to support Ukrainian refugees. , and those who remained in Ukraine during the war.

“Humanitarian corridors and co-operation with international humanitarian organizations such as the Red Cross, the Order of Malta and Caritas are extremely important in this emergency,” stressed Eglītis, pointing to urgent and proactive action to help people trapped in Russia’s territory. under siege.

According to him, the cooperation of the Baltic States and joint action with Poland, which currently receives most of the Ukrainian refugees, provides them with all the necessary initial assistance and helps other European countries with their experience, is no less important.

The statement signed between the Baltic states emphasizes the urgent need for humanitarian corridors to ensure the safe flow of refugees and the provision of humanitarian assistance – the necessary basic goods and medicines for those who remain in Ukraine.

The notification has been submitted to the responsible UN bodies and to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Russian troops have reportedly been invaded by Russian troops on February 24 at the behest of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is now firing not only at military facilities but also at civilian infrastructure and civilians. Ukrainian soldiers and the population are strongly opposed to the invaders.
