THE BALL – Trump wished Beijing had informed him about Covid-19 (United States)

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that China kept in reserve what was happening to Covid-19 and said he would have liked to have informed him earlier to find solutions.

“I wish China had told us what was happening before. We didn’t know until news began to be published, ”Trump said at a press conference with the team fighting the new Coronavirus in the White House (Washington), in the company of vice president Mike Pence.

Trump said that if he had known in advance he could have tried to find a solution and regretted that China was “very reserved” in this regard.

The American president also stressed that, when he learned about Covid-19, he ordered “the closure”, in an allusion to the entry restrictions that he imposed on travelers from China and, later, from Europe.

“Beijing has not benefited from this attitude, having instead lost thousands and thousands of people,” he added, after admitting that, on January 24, he praised the “hard work” of the Asian country against the virus.

“They were being transparent at the time,” claimed Trump, who called the relationship with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “extraordinary”.

Donald Trump denied that he responded late to the pandemic after the ‘The Washington Post’ reported that US intelligence agencies had issued warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the new Coronavirus.

The newspaper said that both the US President and lawmakers “minimized the threat and did not take action”.
