THE BALL – Sporting ‘turns’ Mafra and regains 2nd place (Revelation Cup)

It was with a turnaround in the second half that Sporting overcame the home defeat a week ago, against Gil Vicente, with a triumph over Mafra (3-1), also at their Academy, in Alcochete.

The confrontation between Sporting and Mafra reserved the dispute for one of the two places of access to the Revelation Cup: the lions had the advantage, with three points of advantage that the visitors intended to annul. That goal came closer in a first successful incursion, which took place in the 8th minute: Sérgio Meireles launched André Lopes at speed from the left to invade the Sporting area and score.

Sporting took control of the operations from then on and made use of the set piece to equalize, in a corner taken by Lucas Dias from the left for the victorious impulsion of Chico Lamba (back in the competition).

The ascendant continued to belong to the green-and-whites, who, however, only consummated the turnaround in the second half, still in an initial period (at 52′), through an individual initiative by André Gonçalves on the left. The leonine number 7 crossed low into the small area for the subtle appearance of Gonçalo Braga.

The lion never lost control of the match, especially after Gonçalo Barros was sent off, so it was natural for him to make it 3-1, at 75′, in a shot by Rafael Besugo already inside the area, after Kiko Félix have sought space against the Mafra centrals.

Sporting thus secured an important victory that allows them to regain second place, taking advantage of the defeat by Farense and the fact that Portimonense only plays in a week to isolate themselves.
