THE BALL – Shakhtar Donetsk player joins the army (Ukraine)

Viktor Korniienko, 23-year-old left-back for runners-up Shakhtar Donetsk, has enlisted as a volunteer in the Ukrainian army that is defending the country from Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian international, formed at the club that was once coached by the Portuguese Paulo Fonseca, was deployed to support the battlefront, being in charge of evacuating wounded and supplying compatriots who are on the front line.

In addition to Korniienko, goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov and defenders Mykola Matvkienko and Valeriy Bondar have already expressed support for the war and willingness to defend the nation if called upon by the government.
