African champions Senegal grabbed their first World Cup victory and left Qatar virtually doomed to remain in the group stage. In an intense game, especially in the second half, the final 3-1 is justified.
Dia scored Senegal’s first goal of the competition in the 42nd minute and, early in the second half, fellow striker Diédhiou extended the lead. It looked like a controlled match for the Taranga Lions, but playing at home Qatar finally had the courage to be sharper in attack and it ended up being rewarded with a goal from Mohammed Muntari, who had just come on and scored the first goal of the Qatar at the World Cup.
In the stands, the comeback was still dreamed of, but the dream was short-lived, as Bamba Dieng took advantage of a late cross to score Senegal’s third goal and settle the match there.
Senegal was much stronger and in the last round decides in the meeting with Ecuador whether or not they will be in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Qatar, on the other hand, faces the Netherlands in the last round, but, after being defeated also in the opening match by Ecuador (0-2), is practically condemned to remain in the group stage.
