Jérôme Rothen, a former French international who distinguished himself with Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, believes his compatriot Karim Benzema deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
“Yes him [Benzema] can win the Golden Ball,” said Rothen, in statements made to the RMC, justifying:
“Some people want to talk about their history, which is one of the criteria, but also individual performances, class, charisma and fair play. When it comes to charisma and fair play, there are few like Benzema. When it comes to class, he has a lot. This year, no one has had the elegance of Benzema in goals against Belgium and Spain in the League of Nations.”
“Only his record is inferior to those who have won competitions like the European and the Champions, but everything else is in Karim’s direction. He has been at the height of his talent for a few years, since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. Cristiano has been huge and Messi has more talent, elegance, class… but they both got older, lived through difficult times. I don’t think they are in the race for this Golden Ball.
