THE BALL – Man. City (with only one Portuguese) wins in Leeds with two goals from Haaland

Manchester City beat Leeds, at Elland Road, on Wednesday evening 3-1, in a match that closed the day of ‘Boxing Day’ of the Premier League, with goals from Rodri (45′) and two goals from Haaland (51 ‘ and 64’).

It was an indisputable triumph for the reigning champions, who had an advantage in all game variants, from ball possession, to shooting and attacking. Without João Cancelo (who only came on in the 68th minute), Bernardo Silva (who didn’t come off the bench) and Rúben Dias (injured), Pep Guardiola’s team built chances for a defeat that didn’t only come thanks to goalkeeper Meslier and the lack of inspiration from Haaland.

It is true that the 22-year-old Norwegian forward scored twice (both from Greaslish), but he could have scored many more. Perhaps subconsciously there was a love for the opposing club, given that it is in Leeds that Haaland was born when his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played there from 1997 to 2000. That’s why the Nordic giant didn’t celebrate.

Leeds still got the honorable goal, from Pascal Struijk, from a corner kick (in the team’s first and only shot within the game) but the triumph was never in jeopardy. Manchester City are back in second place, pushing Newcastle into third place (they have one game more than the ‘Citizens’) and remain five points behind leaders Arsenal.
