When Hugo Lloris takes to the field to face Poland in the round of 16 of the World Cup on Sunday, he will go down in French national team history, equaling Lilian Thuram as the player with the most caps (142).
“I dont think about it. Obviously I feel proud, but on the eve of a World Cup round of 16 match, this is secondary. For me the World Cup comes first. I want to focus all my energies on this match because we have a new battle ahead of us. This is something I will appreciate more when the tournament is over, and I hope it ends in the best possible way,” said the 35-year-old goalkeeper, pointing to France’s revalidation of their world title.
Lloris spoke at the press conference ahead of the match against Poland, which was also attended by coach Didier Deschamps.
“Records are there to be broken. These data are a record of the longevity of two exemplary players, two great professionals, always of the highest level. All records make sense and this shows the matches played by the national team over many, many years,” stressed Deschamps, who played alongside Thuram in the team that became world champions in 1998.
