Using his personal social network Instagram account, centre-back José Fonte clarified, in case there was any doubt, what he said about Cristiano Ronaldo on British television the BBC in the aftermath of Portugal’s 6-1 victory over Switzerland.
In the publication, the Portuguese international points out: “In a simple way, because football is simple, what I mentioned was the beauty and the pleasure I felt in seeing the selection on display and… I didn’t say that the selection plays better without Ronaldo. I said Portugal play differently. With the presence of someone like Ronaldo on the pitch, naturally genuinely, unconsciously, we try (in my opinion) to play with him as much as possible. For being who you are, for everything you’ve done, for everything you’ve given us and will continue to give. At no time have I underestimated or relativized Cristiano or any of my national team mates, indeed in this interview I say that he is the best ever ”.
«I simply explained that the team without Cristiano, for me, is a team with a different style of play (any team would be), it reacts differently, it has to be more fluid, because we don’t have the reference that is Cristiano. With this I hope I have cleared up any noise about my statements, which have never been derogatory », he wins.
