At the age of 37, Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga announced that he will end his tennis career after the Grand Slam at Roland Garros in Paris. The Frenchman’s persistent injuries in recent years have led to a huge drop in ranking – is currently number 220 in the ATP hierarchy – and Tsonga communicated the decision through a video on social media.
Over almost two decades, Tsonga won 18 ATP titles and reached number 5 in the world in 2012, having also won a Davis Cup for his country.
At the Grand Slams, the Frenchman reached a final (Open Australia, 2008) and four semi-finals (twice at Wimbledon and twice at Roland Garros).
“I made this decision a few weeks ago and I want to stop on the pitch. It will be my 500th career tournament and the one that best represents everything I’ve achieved. My body tells me to stop and I am no longer up to what is required”, said the tennis player in the farewell video.
