In an interview with the official channels of Manchester United, this Friday, the Portuguese international midfielder Bruno Fernandes, addressed the contract renewal process in April last year and explained why he accepted to extend the connection to the red devils.
«I had a conversation with the club when everyone already knew that Ralf [Rangnick] would not be our coach in the future. And when the club decided [quem seria o sucessor], I spoke to them and told them that I wanted to be a solution, I wanted to help, but I also wanted to know which direction the club wanted to go. If there was a plan, a future. This was before I signed my new contract [até 2026]. I told them that, obviously, money is important, no one can hide that, it is important that we always earn more and more, whether in football or in any other profession, because whatever you do, you always want the best for yourself», he declared, initially, the midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes added that he was constantly on the lookout for the future of Manchester United: “At the time, I said that I was fine with money, but that I didn’t want a contract without knowing whether we would have a good future for the club. I want to know which direction we’re going. I didn’t need to know who the coach was, but what the club’s ideas were for the future. If there was a plan, how far we could go, what we wanted, if we were going to fight for titles or try to build something in the Champions League. For me, this is not enough. The club told me that they had a plan, that they agreed with me, that the level of the club had to be much better than in the past, that we could achieve and do much more. That’s why I never had my head out of here and I just make sure the club continues to follow that line of thought and that direction since I signed.”
Regarding Ten Hag, the Portuguese international praised: «Since he was hired, the club has shown us that these are the rules we want to follow, this is the direction, this is how it will be in the coming years, I hope, and he has been very good for us. The discipline that the coach brought to the club, to everyone, changed the mindset of the entire club, not just the players.”
