Carlos Alberto Soares, father of Everton Cebolinha, explained, in an interview with ESPN, why the Brazilian winger did not succeed at Benfica. Everton was hired by the eagles from Grêmio in 2020, for 20 million euros, ending up leaving this season for Flamengo, for €13.5 (the deal could reach €16M through bonuses).
In the interview, the father of the Brazilian international pointed out some blame for Benfica’s locker room, considering it ‘party’.
«Everton wanted to go to Benfica, had the dream of playing in Europe. The club’s structure is one of the best in the world, but Everton’s adaptation was not good. Both at a family level and at Benfica. He arrived at a club where, after a few months, the president was arrested and the locker room was divided. He felt it and saw himself in the press. I was in a team that was not well-connected», explained Carlos Soares, revealing the reasons that led Everton to opt for Flamengo. And the change could even have materialized sooner, he explains.
“The interest arose at the beginning of the year but he, at that time, did not even want to listen. He still had the Champions League, the League Cup final and the championship. At the end of the season, yes, he told me that he would return home to play for Flamengo. Now he is happy, wants to get back in good shape and dreams of being at the World Cup in Qatar”, concluded Carlos Soares.
Everton, 26, made his debut last night for Flamengo, watching for one of the goals in the 4-0 rout against Juventude.
