Bayern Munich’s dominance in Germany is starting to tire, so the Bundesliga is studying changes in the competition and may introduce play-offs at the end of the seasons, to counter the more than predictable final result – Bayern champion.
That’s what happened in the last nine championships and it looks like it’s about to happen again, as Julian Nagelsmann’s team has a 9-point lead for the second with 13 games to go.
Donata Hopfen, director of the German Federation, took over from the newspaper image that changes are being studied: “I have no taboos on this subject. If the play-offs help, let’s talk about it.”
And after a decade of dominance, even Bayern agree, with resistance from Bayer Leverkusen or Eintracht Frankfurt, for example.
“I think it could be exciting to have a new model such as having a play-off in the Bundesliga. A semi-final and final format could be exciting for fans, it makes sense to think about it. At Bayern we are always open to new ideas”, admitted president Oliver Kahn to the magazine. Kicker.
Former president is against
On the other hand, former president Uli Hoeness sees the idea as a targeted attack on the club. “It’s just an attempt to go against Bayern. There is no play-off in any major league in the world, in England, Spain or France. Mrs Hopfen spends day and night thinking about how to end Bayern’s dominance”, he accused in statements to Servus TV.
