The interest is not new, but in recent weeks Benfica has taken very significant steps in this process and will be close to being able to sign David Neres, a Brazilian winger, 25 years old, who left Ajax for Shakhtar Donetsk in January.
The war scenario in Ukraine left Neres – like all footballers in the country – in a delicate situation and with the need to sign for another club to continue playing while the conflict with Russia lasts.
The striker pleases Benfica a lot, who quickly took the field to bring the player, not on loan, but permanently, counting on the good relations he maintains with Shakhtar and the fact that the Ukrainians have not yet managed to pay off the €18 million debt for Pedrinho: a forward who transferred from Luz last summer.
The operation is not closed, but it may stay very shortly. The main obstacle at this point remains the high salary the player wants to earn.
