The Balkan railway connection to Belgrade was cut off.

S the temporary suspension of traffic on the international railway line Belgrade-Bar (Montenegro) Belgrade lost its railway connections with the other countries of the Balkans. The only currently active international railway line in Serbia connects Dimitrovgrad (Tsaribrod) and Sofia, and the train runs once a day, reports “Danas” newspaper.

While the ruling Serbian Progressive Party boasts of investments in the railway and the renovation of the 75 km railway line between Belgrade and Novi Sad, the situation with the railway is deteriorating, the opposition Serbian movement “Let’s not give Belgrade” said in a statement.

The movement recalls that trains once ran from Belgrade to Vienna, Prague, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Budapest, Timisoara, Istanbul, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Skopje and other European cities.

Today, due to the mismanagement and incompetence of the ruling party, Belgrade has no rail connection to the region. The only active international railway line in Serbia currently connects Serbia’s Dimitrovgrad and Sofia, and the train runs once a day, the announcement said.

Zoran Bukvic, the coordinator of the transport group of “Da ne davame Belgrade”, pointed out that in Western Europe fast trains are a more efficient form of transport than airplanes for destinations up to 400 kilometers. He pointed to the convenience and advantages of passenger trains and the railway as a whole as an environmentally best means of transport, which, if invested in, could become the fastest.
