The Balearic Islands Health Service Introduces RSV Vaccine for Children: Protecting Against Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Its Complications

The Health Service of the Balearic Islands has announced that it will offer for the first time the vaccine against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (VRS) to children who are born or who are up to six months old between October and March, following the recommendations given by the National Public Health Commission.

Virus responsible for most bronchiolitis in children

The approved drug is nirsevimab and it is indicated for passive immunization against RSV, a virus responsible for the majority of bronchiolitis in infants and more than half of hospitalizations and admissions to the ICU due to respiratory processes in children under 6 months.

RSV has also been linked to respiratory diseases bacteria and with the subsequent development of bronchial hyperactivity and asthma. The Ministry of Health has declared the processing of the supply contract by way of urgency, given the need to have sufficient doses to start the campaign. The initial term of the contract will be until June 30, 2024and can be extended for a maximum period of two years.
