The Bald One Smiles: Caroline Le Flour’s One Woman Show about Battling Cancer with Humor

Psychopractitioner, author, humorist and “resilient multi-recidivist”, as she defines herself, Caroline Le Flour had to face cancer at the age of 32. It is this fight that she recounts with humor, casualness and authenticity in her one woman show, The bald one smileswhich will be presented tomorrow, at 8 p.m., at the Dôme of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Chartres.

How was your show born?

When I was in chemotherapy, I wrote down everything that made me laugh because I needed to express how I felt, and also to tell my family. A bit like a posthumous testimony in case I don’t pass the test. After remission, these writings became the one woman show The bald one smileswhich I have been playing all over France since 2018.

What are the donations collected during Pink October in Eure-et-Loir used for?

Having cancer is a difficult ordeal. Even more so when you’re young??
At the time, I had major back problems and was very tired. I had been losing weight for a month, I was on medical wandering… When the diagnosis was made, finally knowing what I had, was a relief, but also a shock, because I had lost my father-in-law by a lung cancer a few years ago. I didn’t really understand when I was told that I had a tumor, but the word cancer, for me, was synonymous with death.

What memories do you have of your treatment?
I underwent nine months of very intensive chemotherapy. I had lymphoma between my heart and lung. A tumor that grows very quickly in young people and I lived in the hospital most of the time, in a sterile room. This is also why I took refuge in writing. I wrote everything that made me laugh, the reactions of my family and my friends, my clumsiness and those of those close to me… Everything that we find on stage.

I have heart problems and I’m infertile, but I give birth to lots of projects, I pass on in my own way.

Having perspective in the face of the challenges we go through is not given to everyone…

I have a rather optimistic and energetic character; certainly mental strength and also a predisposition to resilience. Humor allows you to distance yourself; it is also a lever to provoke exchange. But in my show, there are also moments of emotion: fear, anger, sadness…

How does the public react?

I receive 99% positive feedback. This show helps support those who are going through the ordeal of cancer, but also their caregivers and companions. He frees speech. It offers caregivers a patient testimony, but the general public will also benefit from it. The spectators are surprised to laugh at the illness.

For an hour, we talk about cancer, I also have fun expressing what many are thinking quietly. But it can encourage screening and raise awareness: it doesn’t just happen to others.

“Early” cancers have jumped by 80% since 1990: why are those under 50 more exposed?

What lesson do you learn from your journey?
Cancer allowed me to answer questions: what is the meaning of my life?? what do I really want to do?? A show, books, conferences… The illness has left its mark: I have heart problems and I’m infertile, but I give birth to lots of projects, I pass on in my own way. I see the glass half full: I am in remission, my life needs to be taken care of a little more, but it is more qualitative.
