The balancing act of Brazil, host of the G20

DECRYPTION – The country, a member of the Brics group extended in particular to Iran, cultivates good relations with several Western states.

Brazil has good relations with everyone: with the West, but also China, Russia, as well as other countries in the « Sud global ». Left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who welcomes his counterparts at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro on Monday and Tuesday, hopes that this policy of good understanding will make it possible to produce a joint declaration at the end of the summit. But nothing is less certain, as two major conflicts become bogged down and the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January will loom over the meeting.

Originally dedicated to economic issues, the G20 summits have been overtaken by security issues. During the previous meeting in New Delhi in September 2023, the wording concerning the situation in Ukraine had already been the subject of fierce negotiations.
