The Bachelor Franchise Showrunners Struggle to Address Racial Issues, NPR Journalist Pushes for Answers

Tensions Arise during ABC Panel Discussion on Racial Issues in Unscripted Television

During the Television Critics Association’s winter 2024 press tour, an ABC panel faced intense scrutiny over the racial issues prevalent in unscripted television. The three showrunners of “The Bachelor” – Jason Ehrlich, Claire Freeland, and Bennett Graebner – were put on the spot when journalist Eric Deggans of NPR brought up the controversies surrounding the treatment of Black cast members.

Chris Harrison’s Departure

One of the controversies mentioned by Deggans was the exit of Chris Harrison, the prominent host of “The Bachelor” following an incident on Matt James’ season. The show faced criticism for the way it presented Matt James’ father, and Rachel Lindsay, the first Black Bachelorette, expressed her concerns regarding the show’s discussions revolving around race.

Learning from Past Scandals

Deggans directly questioned the showrunners about the persistent issues with racial representation on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” and asked if they learned anything from the scandals that led to Chris Harrison’s departure. Claire Freeland, after a moment of silence, responded by stating that their focus now is to represent the diversity in the country, not only in terms of race but also in terms of ability, body types, and regional representation.

A Need for Accountability

Deggans challenged Freeland’s response, arguing that it did not address the underlying issue of the franchise’s struggle with racial representation when Black individuals are in the lead roles. Despite the inquiry, none of the showrunners offered a concrete answer. The question still remains as to why “The Bachelor” continues to struggle with racial issues.

The Future of “The Bachelor”

Despite the lack of a direct response to the question, showrunner Freeland emphasized that they are continually striving to improve and are committed to making positive changes. While they acknowledged their existing efforts, no specific plans were discussed on addressing the show’s challenges with race.

A Failed Opportunity for Resolving Concerns

The panel discussion ultimately ended without a satisfactory answer to why “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” struggle so profoundly in handling racial issues, particularly when Black individuals assume prominence on the show. Eric Deggans’ final comment encapsulated the sentiment in the room, as he concluded with the statement, “I guess we have our answer.”
