(Belga) CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, announced Thursday the abolition of the away goal rule in the home and away matches of the tournaments it organizes.

“From now on, all goals from CONMEBOL tournaments will have the same value, the many away goals will no longer be considered as a deciding factor. With that, we are aiming for greater sporting justice.” In the Copa Libertadores, the main South American competition, the away goal rule was introduced in 2005, but did not apply in the final, played back and forth until 2018.
