The award-winning costume drama Korsete / Diena will start showing in Latvian cinemas with a special screening

Wednesday, February 1, Cinema Citadel before Riga IFF invites you the special screening about Sisija’s life and the film directed by Marija Kreitzer will be told by the Riga International Film Festival (Riga IFF) curator and film researcher Dārta Ceriņa, highlighting the phenomenon of “uncomfortable corsets” of blue-blooded heroes in the history of cinema and revisionist films today.

Sissy’s glamorous life is like champagne, the sparkling of which cannot be restrained by the ruling Habsburg patriarchy, passionless marriage and ceremonial traditions. In the performance of Vicky Krieps, the Austrian ruler Elizabeth is magnetic – without the usual stiffness of costume dramas, she dictates her rules in the second half of the 19th century and shows an elegantly raised middle finger. Maria Kreutzer’s direction is excitingly cinematic and contemporary, while her script does not reduce the character to an instructive parody.

Elizabeth, famous for her gorgeous hair ornament and slender waist, feels tired in her marriage with her husband Franz Joseph, her children have grown up, but the empress has no real political power. As she approaches her 40th birthday, she struggles to maintain her public image by tightening her corset ever tighter. Finally, hungry for knowledge and zest for life, Sissy travels to England and Bavaria to visit former lovers and old friends. She comes up with a plan to leave a lasting impression, despite the imposed norms.

Kriepsa has received both the 2022 Cannes Film Festival for her portrayal of the main role special look and the European Film Academy Award. On the other hand, the film has been nominated for directing at 15 international film festivals. Corset In 2022, it has already received wide audience interest in Latvia, becoming the second most watched film at the Riga International Film Festival.

With the February 1 screening, the film will be shown in cinemas in a limited number of screenings.
