The median wage for the period from the beginning of July to the end of September was CZK 31,183. It was 5.1 percent higher year-on-year. The median is in the middle of wage values, so half of the wage values are lower than the median and the other half higher.
“In the third quarter, women’s average wages rose by 6.7 percent year on year, while men’s wages rose by only 3.7 percent. However, men still had a significantly higher wage level, “said Dalibor Holý, Director of the Labor Market and Equal Opportunities Statistics Department of the CZSO.
Nominally, wages grew in all sectors except finance and insurance, where they fell by almost 500 crowns. “Nevertheless, this sector remains in second place with its wage level, the average wage was 55,449 crowns there,” the CZSO analysis states. The highest wages are paid by people working in information and communication technologies, where the average is 60,878 crowns.

Wages in health and social care rose most markedly in the third quarter. The year-on-year increase of almost 12 percent was related to the change in the salary scales since the beginning of the year and to the non-tariff components, ie remuneration. Similarly, statistics also saw a dynamic increase in salaries for administrative and support service activities, which include employment agencies. “There was a massive redundancy, one-seventh of the original number of employees disappeared year-on-year, and these were probably those with below-average wages, and thus the arithmetic average of the remaining will increase automatically,” explains the CZSO.
Preliminary data from business statistics according to the CZSO show a sharp decline in the registered number of employees in the Czech Republic. “The number of employees decreased by 125,000 year-on-year,” said Holý. 15 percent of workers in accommodation, food and hospitality decreased. “Some employees went into unemployment, but others remained economically inactive at least temporarily, mainly because they were not looking for a job,” adds Holý.
The number of employees is below four million for the second quarter in a row. It was last below this limit in the first quarter of 2017.
