The average wage in the Czech Republic in the third quarter of this year rose by 5.1 percent year on year to 35,402 crowns. Employees thus took CZK 1,716 gross more than a year ago. In real terms, ie taking into account inflation, wages rose by 1.7 percent. The Czech Statistical Office (CSO) informed about it on Friday. Compared to the second quarter, seasonally adjusted average wage growth was 5.8 percent.

The median wage for the period from the beginning of July to the end of September was CZK 31,183. It was 5.1 percent higher year-on-year. The median is in the middle of wage values, so half of the wage values are lower than the median and the other half higher.

“In the third quarter, women’s average wages rose by 6.7 percent year on year, while men’s wages rose by only 3.7 percent. However, men still had a significantly higher wage level, “said Dalibor Holý, Director of the Labor Market and Equal Opportunities Statistics Department of the CZSO.

However, the unemployment rate in the Czech Republic is also growing. After falling to 3.7 percent in October, it rose again to 3.8 percent in November this year. Over 274,500 people were out of work, which is the most in November since 2016. Current figures are provided by the Labor Office of the Czech Republic.

In addition to the number of unemployed, the number of vacancies also increased in November, by approximately 7,000 to almost 318,000 compared to October. According to the office, the interest is mainly in technical and labor professions and, in the long run, also in skilled craftsmen.

Unemployment began to rise significantly this year after the start of the covid-19 pandemic, the first cases of which occurred in the Czech Republic on March 1. In the first three months of the year, it was still around three percent. Unemployment rose to 3.4 percent in April and stood at 3.8 percent from July to September.

“As for the tourist season, in most regions it was interrupted due to the security measures taken. With the start of the winter, employers are waiting for the development of the overall situation and the related possible disintegration, “commented Viktor Najmon, Director General of the Labor Office of the Czech Republic, on the current development of unemployment. “Unemployment is likely to rise in the coming months due to the slowdown in seasonal work, especially in agriculture and forestry. The overall development will also depend on the situation around coronavirus, “he added.

The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Jana Maláčová (ČSSD), presented some data on unemployment on Twitter half an hour before the official publication of statistics by the Labor Office of the Czech Republic. “Work is mainly in industry, unemployment has decreased in regions with industrial zones,” the minister said.

At the end of November, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in the districts of Rychnov nad Kněžnou with 1.8 percent and Pelhřimov with 1.9 percent. Karviná has the highest unemployment for a long time, where it was 7.9 percent in November.

On the other hand, the smallest competition on the labor market is in the districts of Prague-East, Mladá Boleslav and Plzeň-South, namely 0.2 applicants for each vacancy.
