the average number of infections climbs to 490 (+ 68%), sharp increases in Brussels and Liège

The average number of coronavirus infections continues to rise and has risen to 490.7 per day between July 24 and July 30, the Sciensano Public Health Institute said on Monday in the data update of its dashboard. This represents a 68% increase compared to the previous week.

The number of infections in Belgium now stands at 69,849, against 69,402 on Sunday, i.e. 447 cases reported in 24 hours, which is a lot compared to previous weeks.

It is still in the province of Antwerp that the greatest number of new cases are diagnosed (1416, an increase of 466 compared to the previous week), but behind, it is now Brussels and Liège which are the most affected, with incidence rates of 28.8 cases and 27,1 over a week for 100,000 inhabitants. Which represents in one week for Brussels 353 new cases (increase of 204), and 305 for Liège (increase of 162).

Relatively less affected with an incidence of 17,8, Hainaut also shows a strong increase in cases with 223 cases over one week (against 109 the previous week). Ditto for Namur, which goes from 37 at 84 cases (incidence of 16.7)

The number of new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants continues the same upward trend. For the period spanning two weeks, and until July 30 inclusive, 47.7 cases were identified (against 44.3 Sunday).

The number of hospital admissions is also increasing with an average of 24.4 per day (25 Sunday), a 60% increase from the previous week.

Sciensano also reports an average of 2.7 deaths per day. Since the start of the epidemic, 9,845 people have lost their lives as a result of Covid-19.
